Tennis Elbow Splint
A tennis elbow splint is useful when treating tennis elbow.
Tennis elbow is usually a painful condition that is caused by over using the elbow. People involved in sports (especially tennis players) are most likely to experience tennis elbow, as can individuals who repeatedly use their arms and elbows in repetitive movements.
One treatment that is commonly suggested by the physicians or therapists is the use of a tennis elbow splint. Tennis elbow is an inflammation of the tendons and so the use of a tennis elbow splint can often aid the elbow and tendons in resting long enough to heal. Tennis elbow causes pain in the muscles surrounding the elbow. A tennis elbow splint may also help with pain relief whilst healing takes place.
Symptoms
One of the symptoms showing that an individual could benefit from using a tennis elbow splint is having a weak grip.
Another sign that a tennis elbow splint may be effective in the healing process is when the person suffers from a pain or burning sensation in the elbow area.
True symptoms of tennis elbow often do not go away quickly and seeing a physician or physical therapist is advisable if the pain persists.
Elbow Surgery
Some individuals who suffer from tennis elbow may require surgery. While in recovery from surgery they may be required to use a tennis elbow splint. In this case, the tennis elbow splint is used to keep the elbow immobilised so it can heal properly. The tennis elbow splint may be removed after a week to ten days but some people are required to use it for a longer period of time.
Elbow Exercises
If the individual has had to use a tennis elbow splint after surgery and it is removed within ten days, exercises suggested by a physical therapist are sometimes required. These exercises will help bring back mobility to the injured elbow. They are normally done for six to eight weeks after the tennis elbow splint is removed.
Using a tennis elbow splint will allow the patients injured elbow to heal more quickly and may also help it heal well enough to allow the individual to return to the sport they are involved in. It may take up to eight months of recovery time for tennis elbow to heal, but treatment using a tennis elbow splint is successful in most patients.
