Elbow Pain
Elbow pain is a cause of discomfort for many people. The elbow is the joint in the middle of the arm that allows the arm to bend like a hinge.
The bicep is the muscle that allows the elbow to flex, and the tricep is the muscle that allows the elbow to bend. Tendons are also attached to the elbow; often these can become inflamed and are quite painful.
Here, we will look at some common causes of elbow pain and the treatment that is recommended for these conditions.
Perhaps the most common cause of elbow pain is Tennis Elbow or lateral Epicondylitis. This condition can produce a burning pain in the elbow, which can sometimes radiate down the arm.
Tennis Elbow is caused by inflammation of the tendons in the elbow and usually starts out quite mild, but becomes worse over time. Tennis Elbow can be caused by playing tennis, as well as activities like cutting with scissors or painting, which are repetitive motions.
The average age range for developing Tennis Elbow is 35-50 years old, but it can occur at any age.
Tennis Elbow Treatment
The treatment for tennis elbow consists of anti-inflammatory medications such as Advil, for relief of pain. Ice is also sometimes helpful for reducing pain. Corticosteroid injections are an option if symptoms persist.
Bursitis
Another frequent cause of elbow pain is bursitis. This occurs when the bursa (a small fluid-filled sac that acts as a cushion in joints) becomes inflamed. This may become injured during the normal activities of daily life, such as lifting a child, or from a localized infection.
Bursitis Symptoms
The symptoms of bursitis are tenderness, swelling and pain with movement of the elbow. Bursitis can also affect the knees, hips and shoulders. If there is no infection present, then treatment may include aspiration of the fluid in the bursa (drawing out), or corticosteroid injections.
Gout
Another cause of elbow pain is a condition known as Gout, which is an overabundance of uric acid in the body. This leads to tiny crystals forming in tissues and joints, which in turn can lead to an arthritic condition, which is very painful. Diet is very important in controlling Gout, as certain foods may aggravate this condition. Gout typically is more common in men than women.
Elbow injuries
Elbow injuries, such as fractures, can also cause elbow pain. Elbows are often fractured by falling during a sport, such as bike riding, tennis or running. This condition can be very painful and often requires urgent medical attention. Once it is determined that the elbow is fractured, the arm may be immobilized or splinted to decrease movement. Surgery is sometimes necessary if the fracture is severe.
Elbow pain can be debilitating, and it is important to seek treatment before symptoms worsen, or the length of recovery time could increase. The better care we take of our joints, the less likely we are to experience these conditions.
